The Meningitis ACWY vaccine helps protect against four strains of bacterial meningitis. It is required by Saudi Arabia for all Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, and is strongly recommended for travel to the meningitis belt of sub-Saharan Africa.
What is meningitis ACWY?
Bacterial meningitis is an infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can progress rapidly and be life-threatening. The ACWY vaccine covers the four strains most commonly responsible for disease in travellers — groups A, C, W, and Y.
Who needs this vaccine?
- Hajj and Umrah pilgrims — proof of vaccination is required for a Saudi Arabia visa
- Travellers to sub-Saharan Africa, particularly the meningitis belt (Senegal to Ethiopia)
- Those attending large gatherings or festivals in high-risk regions
- Travellers who have not had a Meningitis ACWY vaccine in the past 5 years
Doses & schedule
A single dose provides protection for up to 5 years. For Hajj and Umrah, the vaccine must be given at least 10 days before travel and within 3 years of travel (some visa requirements specify a tighter window — confirm with your travel agent or the Saudi consulate).

Yes — it's the same type of vaccine. However, UK teenagers receive it at around age 14 and may need a booster for Hajj or travel to high-risk regions if their last dose was more than 5 years ago.
