Typhoid Vaccine
Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection spread through contaminated food and water. It's one of the most widely recommended travel vaccines and takes just a single injection, with protection lasting three years.
What is typhoid?
Typhoid is caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi and is contracted by eating or drinking food or water contaminated with the faeces of an infected person. Symptoms include a sustained high fever, headache, stomach pain, and constipation or diarrhoea. Without treatment it can be serious.
Who needs this vaccine?
- Travellers to South Asia — particularly India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, where risk is high
- Travellers to Africa, Southeast Asia, and parts of Central and South America
- Those eating street food or travelling off the beaten track
- Visitors to friends and relatives in affected countries
Doses & schedule
A single injection provides protection for up to 3 years. It should ideally be given at least 2 weeks before travel, though it can be given closer to departure if needed. A booster is recommended every 3 years for continued travel to high-risk areas.
