MMR Vaccine (Measles, Mumps & Rubella)
Measles outbreaks have been reported in many popular travel destinations in recent years. If you haven't had two doses of the MMR vaccine or haven't had measles naturally, you may not be fully protected — particularly important before international travel.
What is MMR?
The MMR vaccine helps protect against three viral infections:
- Measles — a highly contagious respiratory virus that can cause serious complications including pneumonia and brain inflammation. Global outbreaks have become more common in recent years.
- Mumps — a viral infection causing swollen glands, which can occasionally lead to complications including deafness or viral meningitis.
- Rubella (German measles) — usually mild in adults but can cause serious problems if contracted during pregnancy.
Who should consider this vaccine?
- Adults who have not had two documented doses of MMR vaccine
- Anyone born before 1990 who may have received only one dose or an earlier single-disease vaccine
- Travellers to destinations with reported measles outbreaks
- Students, healthcare workers and those in communal living
- Women planning pregnancy who are unsure of their rubella immunity

Doses & schedule
Two doses are required for reliable long-term protection, given at least 4 weeks apart. If you've previously had one dose, a second is recommended to complete the course. A blood test to check immunity is also available if you're unsure of your status — ask your clinician.
Frequently asked questions
If you received two doses as part of the UK childhood programme (introduced in 1988), you are likely well protected. However, some adults vaccinated in the 1970s or early 1980s may have received only one dose, or a single-disease measles vaccine that doesn't cover mumps and rubella. If you're unsure, your clinician can check your records or arrange a blood test.
MMR is part of the routine childhood schedule on the NHS. Adults who missed doses may be able to get it free through their GP. We offer it privately for those who prefer a same-day appointment without a GP referral.
MMR is a live vaccine and is not recommended during pregnancy. It should be given before pregnancy, or after delivery. Your clinician will advise on timing.
MMR is not recommended for people who are pregnant, severely immunocompromised, or who have had a serious reaction to a previous dose. Your clinician will confirm your suitability at your appointment.
